Update: Sessions are online and registration is open now: www.delphilive.com

As an Advisory Board member I am proud to post this official pre-announcement for the next, long awaited physical Delphi conference.

Logo

Where: San Jose, CA, USA
When: May 13th – 16th 2009
Who: All Delphi developers, let it be Delphi Win 32, Delphi Prism or Delphi for PHP ones.

We will try to get all the known top speakers, from the US and Overseas to make this event absolutely rocking. The conference will be organized by Software & Support Verlag, supported by CodeGear / Embarcadero. San Jose was chosen as location as it is close to CodeGear’s HQ, so that CodeGear staff can show up easily.

Attendees

For now, block this event in your calendar if you are interested. We will keep the price affordable – details will be posted asap.

To register, please go to the DelphiLive 2009 Website – which will go online in the next two weeks. We will send announcement emails through CodeGear’s Developer Network as soon as registration is open. Make sure you are signed up at CodeGear Developer Network and CDN emails are not blocked by your spam filters.

Speakers

If you want to present sessions at Delphi Live 2009, then please stay tuned for the official Call For Papers, which will be made public in the next 2 days or so.

Topics

We will cover from basics to advanced topics all around Delphi. The final topic list will be made available as soon as the call for papers is closed.

Following is a draft of tracks:

  • Architecture / Design
  • OOP
  • Database
  • IDE, Tools & Components
  • Core Development
  • Basics / Fundamentals
  • Native Delphi
  • Delphi Prism
  • Delphi & .NET
  • Delphi & Web
  • Delphi & PHP
  • Delphi & Ruby on Rails

If you have suggestions for specific topics you would like to be covered (and which you do not want to present yourself), then feel free to post these suggestions as comments to this blog. The same goes for speakers which you would definitely like to see in San Jose.

Delphi conference need to be "physical" and also broadcasted online and recorded...
  • Thanks. I will bring that up for discussion.
  • You know, there are plenty of reasons that can be given for Delphi's decline in recent years, but one of the big ones gets overlooked far too often: we're not attracting new programmers. They're not teaching Pascal in too many high schools these days, or colleges either. So if the schools won't do it for us, we've got to attract kids ourselves, and the earlier the better. (I personally started coding way back in 3rd grade.)

And what's the best way to get kids interested in programming? Game programming, of course. "I can make my own video games!" But that's not something traditionally associated with Delphi. Just look at the list of tracks. We've got OOP and Database categories. Where's the gaming category? I've put the word out about this conference over at pascalgamedevelopment.com. We've got some great resources available for game development. Let's just see if we can't get some presenters to talk about them!
  • Excellent point! I'll put thatonto the list

I would have loved to come (and attended several Borland/Inprise conferences in the past), but it is smack in the middle of MS TechEd this year! Maybe if this is ever done again, you can schedule around TechEd as I know of a couple of folks who would be interested and trying to keep Delphi alive at their companies (me included), but are already booked to attend and/or speak at TechEd. Probably not your biggest concern, but I thought I would raise it nonetheless as I would have really liked to attend--I always got a lot out of the Borland-specific conferences! Best of luck at any rate!
  • We found MS' Teched announcement the day after we announced "our"
conference. Next time we will try to avoid that conflict :)
On the other hand Teched is not really a programming conf like PDC
is, so we don't actually compete...

Waitasec. YOu want to keep Delphi alive at your company, so you choose to go instead to a conference hosted by the guys who are doing the most to kill it?

    ...OK...
  • I think it's legitimate to say Borland almost killed Delphi, and if
you look at Borland's stock value I would say (as a non stock expert)
it's not even sure that Borland itself will survive.
Delphi has now a new home at Embarcadro and I don't think they would
have spent 30M to let die Delphi.

I would have to agree that it was Borland that almost killed Delphi, particularly with the HUGE delay in even getting .NET 2.0 compatible--it was that delay specifically that forced us to go to C# for our web development as clients wanted .NET for the web. I certainly don't think Microsoft is trying to kill Delphi in the least and based on past conferences they have actually been pretty supportive--I believe they sponsored the outing at the children's science museum at one of the BorCons if memory serves. We still use Delphi for Win32 development on the desktop, but are 100% .NET and C# for our web applications and web services at this point. TechEd actually does have some pretty good sessions for programmers on the ASP.NET side and the new version of C# coming out (I loved hearing Anders at the BorCons and still love hearing him at Microsoft stuff!) Hope to see y'all next year if you do another conference, as I will definitely be there--maybe they can have the "Embarcadero Barbarians"?! (I am really dating myself with that reference!)

How can you enjoy Anders speaking? he is not a god speaker! but a great programmer who saver bil A**

I wanted to be there at this conference but my schedule didn't allow it. Later I found out that there are many good providers of conference calling services so at the next one I'm there!
