VCL for the Web / IntraWeb Workshop

This Power Workshop starts with providing an overview of the available Web development tools for Delphi/C++ Builder. During the introduction the different approaches of WebSnap / WebBroker (Win32), ASP.NET (.NET) and IntraWeb will be explained. The differences between page- and application-oriented Web development will be discussed to finally introduce the Application Mode of IntraWeb.

The goal of this session is to learn the base skills to develop a complex Web application. Both strategies, starting from scratch or porting an existing Windows desktop application, will be taught.

Requirements

Basic skills in Delphi or C++ Builder are required. Examples are shown in primarily in Delphi, but depending on the attendee structure C++ samples can also be shown. Please bring your laptop. Delphi 5 or better should be pre-installed. IntraWeb can be installed with the help of the trainer.

This can easily be implemented by using IntraWeb TIWMpeg component. Just drop as many instances of that guy onto your form as you need:

There are basically three settings you have to look at:

1. MPEGFile : There you have to set the file name which should be played. Remember that all files need to be in the application’s /FILES directory if you set the file via MPEGFile.Filename. You can also link to external files via MPEGFile.URL. In the latter case, remember to specify a full URL, including HTTP:// that is.
2. For sound files set MPEGFile.RenderEMBED to true.
3. To prevent the sounds to start playing instantly when the form shows up, we have to add AutoStart=false. This needs to be done by attaching the OnHTMLTag event:

IWMpeg can not just play Mpeg files (MP3 sounds, Mpeg movies etc), but also wav, mdi and other sound files. It basically depends on the user’s browser. I’ve successfully tested “wav” files with IE, FF, Opera and Safari.

This will render one “Play Button” per IWMpeg component:

Playing a Sound as Response to an Async Event

If you want to play a sound to “visualize” that an async event just returned (e.g. OnAsyncClick of a Button), then just do this:

This starts the sound for  a TIWMPEGFile named “BeepSound” once the async event returned. BEEPSOUNDIWCL is a “shortcut” to get access to BeepSound’s HTML representation. All IntraWeb components can be accessed in JavaScript by their name in upper case plus ‘IWCL’ (IntraWeb Class Library).

This is all you need to Ajax-enable your IntraWeb application:

Very simple, but what if you want to call async events from your own custom JavaScript? How to connect key events to some async IntraWeb handler?

This is the Delphi side of an async event handler, that listens to CTRL-A in the Web browser:

The techniques/tricks in this demo can be used in any similar environment where you need to reference external libraries. This demo works for IntraWeb 8.0 and 9.0. If you have 9.0, then you can see the advantage of using IntraWeb’s Ajax support.

To use Google’s Map API, you have to register for a free key. This key is per domain, so if you want to test locally with this demo application, then you have to apply for a “127.0.0.1:8888″ key:

In your IntraWeb application you have to add a reference to the API JavaScript library, which is the tricky part. This reference must be available before you can call any API method. This is done in IWForm.OnRender using “JavaScriptOnce”.

The actual Map object is the created in “PageContext.AddToInitProc” calls. The code of these calls is inserted before all other code inserted via AddToInitProc.

More Ajax fixes and enhancements are included. There is currently an
exception when starting BDS, saying that “$(BDS)\Bin\dclIntraWeb_90_100NET.dll”
fails to load. Just ignore that for now. We are working on the .NET part
…

This year’s DevCon will be held in the Fall of 2006 in Northern California.
